Description

The DS1307 Real Time Clock is a is a low-power, full binary-coded decimal (BCD) clock and calendar including 56 bytes of NV SRAM. Address and data are transferred serially through an I2C, bidirectional bus. The clock/calendar provides seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The end of the month date is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap year. The clock operates in either the 24-hour or 12- hour format with AM/PM indicator. The DS1307 has a built-in power-sense circuit that detects power failures and automatically switches to the backup supply (usually a small coin-cell battery). Timekeeping operation continues while the part operates from the backup supply.

The DS1307 consumes only 500nA from the backup battery for timekeeping - this means even a simple coin-cell battery will last for years.

We offer two options for purchasing the DS1307:

  • Option 1: just the chip
  • Option 2: a kit containing everything you need to get started

Option 1: just the chip

This is just the chip itself - no extras! You want this option if you already have your own design, or if you need to replace an existing DS1307 chip.

Option 2: DS1307 Getting Started kit

This kit contains everything you need to get started with the DS1307 - you need to have an existing microprocessor to connect the DS1307 to - if you need a processor, why not check out our microprocessor range? Click here for more details!

The items included in the kit are:

  • DS1307 real time clock chip - 8 pin DIP
  • 32.768kHz crystal
  • 3x 4.7k Ohm pull-up resistors
  • 100nF power filtering capacitor for the DS1307
  • CR2032 battery

Our example schematic shows how to connect the components in the kit together - then just use the three pins shown to connect the DS1307 to your processor.

If you require a pre-built operating circuit please see our other product: DS1307 based Tiny RTC.
